Description

Edit

Laranjeiras is a small locality in the Leiria district, in the municipality of Alvaiázere or the adjacent area. Its name means orange trees, indicating a place where orange or citrus cultivation once defined the local landscape. Citrus trees are found in sheltered valleys throughout central and southern Portugal, where the microclimate allows cultivation in otherwise marginal terrain.

The settlement is modest, set in the forested and agricultural landscape between Alvaiázere and the Ansião basin. The surrounding terrain has the mix of pine forest, scrub, and smallholder plots typical of this part of the Leiria interior.

On the Camino Português, Laranjeiras is a rural waypoint in the forested section between Alvaiázere and Ansião, where the route follows valley corridors through the Leiria hill country.
