Descripción
Itero de la Vega is a small municipality in the province of Palencia, Castilla y León, situated on the Camino Frances as the first village in the province after the Pisuerga river crossing. The name refers to the flat meadow land, vega, beside the river, and the village occupies the low-lying terrain characteristic of the Palencia Campos plain.
The surrounding landscape is the Tierra de Campos, a vast agricultural plain known as the bread basket of Castile. Cereal monoculture, wide open skies, and the minimal topographic variation that characterises this part of the Meseta define the approach.
For pilgrims, Itero de la Vega marks the clear entry into the Palencia stages, a quieter and flatter section of the Camino with a different agricultural character from the Burgos stages above.
