Descripción
Gontomil is a small locality in the Viana do Castelo district of northern Portugal. The name has a pre-Roman or early medieval toponymic origin, suggesting deep settlement history in this part of the Minho.
The settlement occupies agricultural terrain typical of the upper Lima and lower Minho corridors: granite-walled smallholdings, mixed cultivation of maize and vegetables, and vine pergolas on granite posts. The landscape has the green, enclosed quality of this part of the Minho, where moisture and fertility support intensive small-scale farming.
Gontomil lies on the Camino Português approaching Valença, one of the final stages before the border crossing into Spain at the Minho bridge.
