Description
Getaria is a municipality and historic port town in Gipuzkoa, situated on a narrow rocky isthmus connected to the headland known as the Ratón de Getaria (the Getaria Mouse) due to its distinctive profile. The town has a continuous fishing tradition and is the birthplace of Juan Sebastián Elcano, who completed the first circumnavigation of the earth in 1522 after Magellan’s death.
The town is also the heart of the txakoli wine producing area, a slightly sparkling, high-acidity white wine unique to the Basque Country that is produced on the coastal hillsides surrounding Getaria. The medieval church of San Salvador, partially built over an archway through which the town road passes, is one of the more architecturally unusual buildings on the Camino del Norte.
The harbour and the isthmus profile visible from the coastal path make Getaria one of the most visually distinctive stops on the Basque coastal route.
