Descripción
Fuentesnuevas is a small locality in the municipality of Ponferrada, León, on the Camino Frances in the western Ponferrada area. The name means new springs, indicating fresh water sources that historically gave the area its identity in the irrigated Bierzo valley floor.
The surrounding landscape is the characteristic Bierzo valley: flat irrigated farmland on the basin floor, vine-covered slopes rising on each side, and the mountain ring of the Bierzo comarca visible on the horizon. The wine appellation terrain is fully established here, with Mencía vines the dominant agricultural form on the slopes.
For pilgrims, Fuentesnuevas is a passage point on the pleasant vine country stage between Ponferrada and Cacabelos.
