Description

Edit

Fisterra is a town and municipality in the province of A Coruña, Galicia, situated on the Cape Fisterra peninsula, the westernmost point of mainland Iberia and one of the two traditional endpoints of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage extensions from Santiago de Compostela.

The town has a working fishing port with a traditional character, but it is the cape itself, with its lighthouse standing above the Atlantic cliffs, that defines the destination for pilgrims. The tradition of burning one’s boots or other pilgrim equipment at the cape, though not officially encouraged, has become associated with the completion of the Fisterra walk, symbolising the end of one journey and the beginning of the return.

Cape Fisterra, whose name derives from the Latin Finis Terrae meaning the end of the earth, was considered the western edge of the known world in the pre-Columbian era. The lighthouse at the cape is one of the most photographed endpoints of any Camino route.
