Descripción
El Pito is a small locality in the municipality of Cudillero, in Asturias, situated on the elevated coastal terrain between the Nalón estuary and the port of Cudillero. The village is notable for the Palacio Selgas, a late nineteenth-century mansion set in extensive landscaped grounds, which houses the Fundación Selgas-Fagalde and its collection of European art including works by El Greco, Rubens, and Tiepolo.
The Palacio Selgas is architecturally unusual for its setting, a private mansion of considerable ambition in a remote Asturian coastal village, reflecting the wealth accumulated by the Selgas family in the nineteenth century. The gardens are particularly notable, with tropical and subtropical species thriving in the Atlantic microclimate.
For pilgrims on the Camino del Norte, El Pito offers an unexpected encounter with high-quality European art in an intimate rural setting, a sharp contrast to the clifftop and rural terrain of the surrounding stages.
