Description

Edit

El Acebo is a small municipality in the province of León, Castilla y León, situated on the steep western slope of the Montes de León on the Camino Frances at approximately 1,150 metres. The village takes its name from the holly trees, acebos, that cover the surrounding hillsides.

The main street descends steeply in a single lane of cobblestone, with traditional stone houses featuring characteristic wooden first-floor balconies overhanging the street, a building form typical of the mountain villages of this region. The combination of the cobbled descent, the overhanging balconies, and the forested hillsides gives El Acebo a distinctly medieval character unlike the plateau villages below.

For pilgrims, El Acebo is one of the more dramatically situated villages on the Camino Frances, the cobbled descent and the balconied houses providing a memorable architectural encounter at the beginning of the long drop into the Bierzo.
