Description

Edit

Deba is a municipality in Gipuzkoa at the mouth of the Deba river on the Bay of Biscay. The town retains sections of its medieval walls and a historic centre of considerable architectural quality, centred on the church of Santa María de la Asunción, a fourteenth and fifteenth-century Gothic structure whose carved portal is one of the most elaborately decorated in the Basque Country.

The coastal setting at the river mouth, with the beach to the east and the flysch cliffs continuing westward toward Mutriku, gives Deba a dramatic natural backdrop. The Camino del Norte coastal path arrives in Deba after the spectacular cliff section from Zumaia, making it a well-earned rest stop at the end of one of the route’s most scenically intense stages.
