Description
Calzada del Coto is a small municipality in the province of León, Castilla y León, situated on the Camino Frances immediately after Sahagún as the first village in the province of León. The village is notable as the point at which the main Camino Frances divides into two separate routes for several stages.
The official marked Camino Frances continues south through the Cea river valley, while an alternative route known as the Real Camino Inglés or the Via Trajana heads north through Calzadilla de los Hermanillos, following what is believed to be the alignment of the original Roman road. Both routes rejoin at Mansilla de las Mulas.
For pilgrims, Calzada del Coto presents a route choice that many experienced walkers prefer for its quieter and more rural character, the two-day solitary stretch via Calzadilla offering a genuine sense of isolation.
