Bárcena de Cicero

Bárcena de Cicero is a locality in the municipality of Cicero, in Cantabria, situated at the head of the Asón estuary on the inland route around the river. The setting is defined by the broad inner estuary with its salt marshes, tidal channels, and the low hills framing the ría on all sides.

The landscape at the estuary head is flat and open, with wide sky and the sense of a large water body contrasting with the more enclosed valley terrain inland. The Cicero municipality and its surroundings retain a traditional agricultural and fishing character.

For pilgrims on the Camino del Norte, Bárcena de Cicero lies on the route rounding the Asón estuary on the approach to Escalante and the road toward Santoña or Noja.
