Beschreibung
Baracaldo is a city and municipality in the province of Bizkaia in the Basque Country, situated on the left bank of the Nervión river estuary directly across from Bilbao. The city was the centre of the Basque iron and steel industry from the nineteenth century, with the Altos Hornos de Vizcaya steel works operating here as one of the most important industrial complexes in Spain until its closure in the 1990s.
The post-industrial transformation of Baracaldo has followed a similar trajectory to Bilbao, with urban renewal projects, new cultural infrastructure, and residential development replacing the heavy industrial land use. The Guggenheim museum is visible across the river from the Baracaldo waterfront, and the city has developed its own regenerated riverfront.
The Camino del Norte passes through Baracaldo on the left-bank route through the industrial corridor between Bilbao and the outer estuary.
