Description

Edit

Asseiceira is a civil parish in the municipality of Tomar, in the Santarém district, situated on the southwestern approach to the city of Tomar. The terrain here transitions from the flat Tagus plain to the forested hillside landscape that characterises the Tomar-Nabão corridor, with pine, cork oak, and mixed woodland covering the slopes.

The village has a modest residential and agricultural character. Its proximity to Tomar means it is effectively in the city’s outer orbit, and the forested hillside setting gives it a more enclosed, sheltered quality than the open plain localities to the south.

For pilgrims on the Camino Português, Asseiceira marks the beginning of the ascent toward Tomar, one of the route’s most historically significant and visually dramatic stages.
