Description

Edit

Abeleiroas is a small locality in the province of A Coruña, Galicia, on the Camino de Fisterra and Muxía routes. The name derives from aveleira, the Galician word for hazel tree, with the suffix suggesting a grove or concentration of hazels. Hazel woodland was historically common in the sheltered hollows and stream margins of the Galician interior before clearance for agriculture and eucalyptus plantation.

The locality sits in the plateau terrain of the central Fisterra route, in a landscape that combines smallholder farming with patches of remnant native woodland. The hazel toponym preserves the memory of the native woodland cover that preceded the current mixed eucalyptus and agricultural landscape.
