Description

Edit

A Coruña is a city and municipality in the province of the same name in Galicia, Spain, situated on a rocky peninsula between two bays on the Atlantic coast. The city has a layered historical identity: a Roman port of significant antiquity, a medieval and early modern commercial centre, and a contemporary Galician capital.

The Torre de Hércules, a Roman lighthouse on the northern tip of the peninsula, is the oldest functioning lighthouse in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009. The Praza de María Pita in the old town, surrounded by Baroque civic buildings, and the iconic glazed gallery facades of the Avenida de la Marina waterfront are the principal urban landmarks.

For pilgrims, A Coruña is the alternative starting point of the Camino Inglés alongside Ferrol, and the longer of the two Galician branches. Pilgrims departing from A Coruña walk approximately seventy-five kilometres to Santiago de Compostela.
