Description
Villamayor de Monjardín is a municipality in Navarra, situated on the hillside below the ruins of the medieval castle of San Esteban de Monjardín. The village has a compact stone character with the Romanesque-Gothic church of San Andrés, which retains a notable Romanesque font and medieval fabric.
Above the village, the ruined castle on the ridge was a significant medieval fortification. According to local tradition, the Navarrese king Sancho Garcés I defeated Moorish forces here in 908. The castle ruins are visible from the path approaching the village.
For pilgrims, Villamayor marks the end of the Navarrese agricultural landscape before the long, open, and often exposed plain walk to Los Arcos, one of the more demanding sections of this stage for its lack of services and shelter.
