Description

Edit

Vigo is the largest city in Galicia and one of the most important fishing ports in Europe, situated on the southern shore of the Vigo ría. The city has a compact historic centre near the port, with the old fishermen’s quarter of Berbes and the covered fish market among its most characterful spaces.

Above the old city, the Castelo do Castro park contains the remains of a Celtic Iron Age settlement and commands wide panoramic views over the ría, the city, and the Cíes Islands in the mouth of the bay. The Cíes Islands, part of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park, are visible from much of the city as a distinctive three-island profile on the Atlantic horizon.

The Camino Português passes through Vigo on the coastal variant, where the urban stage through the city and its port offers a sharp contrast with the rural clifftop sections to the south.
