Description
Vale de Figueira is a civil parish in the municipality of Santarém. Its name means valley of the fig tree, a toponym common across the Iberian Peninsula where fig cultivation was once a defining feature of the local landscape or a particular valley feature. The settlement occupies the rolling limestone terrain south of the Nabão river corridor, in the agricultural interior of the Santarém district.
The village has a traditional whitewashed character typical of Ribatejo settlements, with low rendered houses and a parish church forming the compact centre. The surrounding land is used for cereal cultivation and olives, with fig trees persisting on the valley slopes.
On the Camino Português, Vale de Figueira lies on the section of the route that passes inland from the Tagus, crossing the undulating limestone plateau between Santarém and the Nabão river.
