Urioste

Urioste is a small locality in the municipality of Abanto-Zierbena, in the province of Bizkaia in the Basque Country, situated on the hillside above the right bank of the Nervión estuary. The settlement occupies elevated terrain where the Camino del Norte climbs from the industrial estuary environment toward the Cantabrian coastal clifftop path heading westward.

The ascent from the estuary floor to the clifftop is one of the more dramatic transitions on the Camino del Norte, shifting rapidly from an urban industrial landscape to open coastal heath and cliff terrain. Urioste sits in this transitional zone where the industrial Bizkaia left behind and the Cantabrian coast begins.
