Description
Unquera is a small town in the municipality of Val de San Vicente, in Cantabria, situated at the mouth of the Nansa river on the border with Asturias. The town is the last settlement in Cantabria on the Camino del Norte, with the bridge over the Nansa marking the transition into the Asturian municipality of Ribadedeva.
Unquera is locally known for its sobaos pasiegos and quesada pasiego, traditional Cantabrian dairy pastries made with butter, eggs, and fresh cheese from the Pasiega valley tradition. These products are widely sold in shops along the main road through the town.
The Picos de Europa are visible to the south from Unquera, and the town serves as a gateway to the mountain range for visitors taking the inland routes. For pilgrims, it is a practical rest stop at a regional border crossing before entering the distinct landscape and culture of Asturias.
