Description
Rabaçal is a civil parish in the municipality of Penela, in the Coimbra district, situated at the foot of the Serra de Sicó limestone massif. The village marks the boundary between the Leiria and Coimbra districts and has a documented history connected to the Roman road network that crossed this part of central Portugal.
The settlement retains a traditional stone character and is associated with a medieval bridge over the Rabaçal stream, which has been an important crossing point on the roads through this area for centuries. The Serra de Sicó rises steeply to the northeast, its limestone cliffs forming a dramatic backdrop to the village.
For pilgrims on the Camino Português, Rabaçal is an important waypoint at the transition between the forested Leiria interior and the limestone and olive-grove terrain of the Coimbra district approach toward Conimbriga and Coimbra.
