Descripción
Puente Orbigo is a locality on the Camino Frances at the famous medieval bridge over the Orbigo river. The bridge is one of the longest medieval bridges in Spain at approximately 204 metres with nineteen spans.
The bridge is associated with the legend of the Paso Honroso of 1434, in which the knight Suero de Quiñones and nine companions jousted at the bridge for a month against all challengers, breaking over three hundred lances, in fulfilment of a vow he had made to a lady. The event is one of the most colourful episodes of medieval Leonese chivalric culture.
For pilgrims, crossing the Orbigo bridge is one of the most anticipated moments of the León stages, the long sequence of arches over the river providing a visually memorable and historically resonant crossing.
