Description

Edit

Portela de Tamel is a parish in the municipality of Barcelos, in the Braga district. Portela is the Portuguese term for a low mountain pass or col, indicating that the settlement occupies a saddle point where a ridge is crossed, a natural waypoint on any route moving across the terrain.

For pilgrims on the Camino Português, Portela de Tamel marks the highest elevation on this section of the route before the descent into the Lima river valley. The crossing offers views in both directions and marks a perceptible shift from the flat Barcelos plain to the undulating terrain approaching Ponte de Lima.

The village is modest, with a small residential core and the open hillside terrain that defines its geographic character.
