Peón

Peón is a small locality in the municipality of Villaviciosa, in Asturias, situated in the rolling hill terrain between Villaviciosa and the approach to Gijón. The village has a quiet agricultural character embedded in the apple orchard and dairy farming landscape of the Villaviciosa hinterland.

The surrounding terrain is the green undulating country typical of central Asturias between the coast and the inland valleys, with orchards, mixed woodland, and the scattered stone farmhouses and hórreos of traditional Asturian rural settlement. The route through Peón on the Camino del Norte crosses the hill corridor heading northwest toward the Gijón metropolitan area.

For pilgrims, Peón falls on the long stage between Villaviciosa and Gijón, a section that offers some of the more open and undulating terrain of the Asturian coast route before the urban entry into Asturias’s largest city.
