Description

Edit

Orisson is a mountain refuge and hostel on the Route Napoleon, situated at approximately 790 metres above sea level on the ascent from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port toward the Spanish border. It is the only significant accommodation point on the high mountain crossing and functions as a crucial rest stop on one of the most demanding stages of the Camino Frances.

The refuge sits on an open ridge with panoramic views over the Basque foothills to the north and the higher Pyrenean peaks to the south. On clear days the panorama extends far into both France and Spain. The exposed position means that weather conditions here can differ dramatically from the valley below.

For pilgrims who leave Saint-Jean late or find the crossing difficult, Orisson provides a staged option for completing the Pyrenean crossing over two days rather than one.
