Descripción
Navia is a town and municipality in Asturias, situated at the mouth of the Navia river on the Bay of Biscay. The town has a traditional fishing and maritime character, with a working harbour at the river mouth and a long sandy beach on the Atlantic-facing shore. The municipality is named for the Navia river, one of the principal watercourses of western Asturias.
Navia is notable for the Museo Castro de Coaña, located a few kilometres upstream, which presents the findings from one of the most important Iron Age Castro settlements in Asturias. The Castro de Coaña itself preserves extensive remains of circular stone hut foundations and defensive walls on a hilltop above the valley.
For pilgrims on the Camino del Norte, Navia provides full services at a significant estuarine crossing, with ferry or bridge options connecting the banks of the river on the westward route.
