Lichos

Lichos is a small commune in the Pyrenees-Atlantiques department, on the Via Podiensis route between Navarrenx and the Basque country. The village occupies the transitional terrain between the Beam and the Basque-speaking hills of the western Pyrenees, where the open agricultural landscape gives way to the more enclosed, intensely green country of the Atlantic hills.

Traditional farmhouses of the Basque type with whitewashed walls and red or green shutters begin to appear in the landscape. For pilgrims, Lichos represents the approach to the Basque cultural zone, where the architecture, language, and landscape begin to shift distinctly.
