Description
Lameiro is a small locality in the Águeda municipality of the Aveiro district. Its name derives from ‘lameiro,’ a Portuguese term for a damp, low-lying meadow or boggy pasture, typically found adjacent to streams and subject to seasonal flooding. The name indicates that the settlement developed in proximity to exactly this type of terrain.
These wet meadow systems are ecologically characteristic of the river basins of central Portugal, supporting distinctive vegetation including rushes, sedges, and moisture-tolerant grasses that provided traditional grazing and hay resources for farming communities. The landscape around Lameiro would have been shaped by this combination of seasonal water, pasture, and small-scale cultivation.
Today the settlement retains its rural character, with the surrounding lowland terrain giving it a softer, damper visual quality compared to the more forested or vine-covered hillside villages in the area.
