Description
Espinal, known in Basque as Aurizberri, is a small municipality in Navarra situated in the valley between the Pyrenean foothills and the Erro river basin. The village has a compact stone character with the sixteenth-century church of San Bartolome at its centre and traditional Navarrese farmhouses lining its short street.
The surrounding landscape is open rolling farmland in the transition zone between the dense Pyrenean beech forests above and the more open terrain of the Navarra interior below. The village retains a quiet agricultural character with limited services but good views of the surrounding hills.
On the Camino Frances, Espinal falls early in the stage between Roncesvalles and Zubiri, providing pilgrims with a first small stopping point after the long Pyrenean descent.
