Descripción
Cornellana is a locality in the municipality of Salas, in Asturias, situated at the confluence of the Narcea and Trubia rivers. The village is defined by the Monasterio de San Salvador de Cornellana, a Benedictine foundation of the twelfth century that is one of the more significant monastic stops on the Camino Primitivo.
The monastery church and associated conventual buildings retain substantial medieval fabric, and the complex continues to operate as a religious house with an albergue for pilgrims. The confluence of the two rivers at Cornellana creates a dramatic landscape setting, with the rivers meeting below the monastery walls.
For pilgrims, Cornellana is typically the first full-service overnight stop after Grado, and the monastery atmosphere provides a traditional pilgrim experience in a working religious community.
