Description
Cirueña is a small municipality in La Rioja, situated on the high plateau between Nájera and Santo Domingo de la Calzada on the Camino Frances. The village is notable in the contemporary pilgrimage context for the modern golf development that now surrounds its approach, replacing what was once purely agricultural terrain.
The historic village centre retains its stone farmhouse character, and the church of San Andrés provides the main architectural landmark. The high plateau position gives wide views over the Rioja plain, with the Sierra de la Demanda visible to the south and the flat plain of the Camino corridor stretching northward toward Logroño.
For pilgrims, Cirueña is a transitional point on the approach to Santo Domingo de la Calzada, the plateau providing easy walking and open views before the descent into the historic cathedral town.
