Description

Edit

Celorio is a coastal locality in the municipality of Llanes, in Asturias, situated on the clifftop above a sheltered sandy bay on the eastern Asturian coast. The village is home to the Monasterio de San Salvador de Celorio, a Cistercian foundation with medieval origins whose church and cloister retain architectural fabric from the twelfth century onward.

The monastery occupies an elevated position above the village and the bay, giving it wide views over the Atlantic. The surrounding landscape combines the exposed clifftop terrain of the Asturian coast with the enclosed green valleys of the interior hinterland.

For pilgrims on the Camino del Norte, Celorio is a waypoint on the coastal section west of Llanes, where the route follows the clifftop path through a succession of small coastal communities before turning inland toward the Sella river valley.
