Descripción
Castelo do Neiva is a civil parish in the municipality of Viana do Castelo, in the Viana do Castelo district. The name means castle of the Neiva, referring to an ancient fortified settlement near the Neiva river. The site has Iron Age and possibly Roman-period occupation evidence, and the hilltop position that gave the locality its name is characteristic of the Castro culture fortifications that defined settlement patterns in northwestern Portugal and Galicia before Romanisation.
The parish occupies the coastal and near-coastal terrain of the Viana do Castelo district, in a landscape of granite farmhouses, vine plots, and the open fields of the lower Neiva valley. The coastal Camino Português passes through this area on the approach to Viana do Castelo.
