Description
Carvalhos de Figueiredo is a small locality in the municipality of Tomar, in the Santarém district. Its name combines carvalhos, meaning oak trees, with Figueiredo, meaning fig-tree place, preserving the memory of the mixed woodland and fruit tree character of this hillside terrain.
The locality sits on the wooded slopes approaching Tomar, in a landscape of mixed forest, scrub, and small agricultural plots. The oak and fig tree combination suggested by the name reflects the transition zone between the denser forest of the higher slopes and the cultivated valley bottom.
This locality lies on the Camino Português in the final approach to Tomar, a short distance below the city on the wooded hillside route that leads up to the Convento de Cristo.
