Description
Carqueijo is a small parish in the Águeda municipality, in the Aveiro district. Its name comes from carqueja, a low-growing heath shrub common to the acid soils and open scrubland of central and northern Portugal, suggesting the plant once dominated the landscape around the settlement or gave the locality its distinguishing character.
The village occupies terrain typical of the inland Aveiro district, where agriculture and remnant heath vegetation coexist on soils less fertile than the Bairrada vineyards to the south. Stone and rendered farmhouses form the residential core, with fields and scrub patches filling the surrounding land.
Carqueijo is one of several small parishes near Águeda that pilgrims on the Camino Português pass through without significant infrastructure, contributing to the quiet, unhurried rhythm of this section of the route.
