Description

Edit

Bolíbar is a small hamlet in the municipality of Ziortza-Bolibar, in the province of Bizkaia in the Basque Country. The hamlet is noted as the ancestral origin of the Bolívar family, whose most famous descendant, Simón Bolívar (1783-1830), became the principal military and political leader of the independence movements that liberated much of South America from Spanish colonial rule.

The Museo Simón Bolívar, housed in a traditional caserio farmhouse in the hamlet, commemorates this connection and attracts visitors interested in the historical link between this quiet Bizkaia valley and the independence of Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia.

The hamlet sits in the intensely green enclosed valley terrain typical of the Bizkaia interior, on the Camino del Norte route approaching the Zenarruza monastery.
