Description
Berceo is a small municipality in La Rioja, situated in the Cárdenas valley near the monastery of San Millán de la Cogolla. The village is the birthplace of Gonzalo de Berceo, a thirteenth-century poet who is considered the first named author in the Castilian language. His religious poems, including the Milagros de Nuestra Señora, were composed at the nearby monastery.
The adjacent San Millán monastery complex, comprising two separate monasteries known as Suso and Yuso, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most historically significant religious complexes in Iberia. The cave monastery of Suso, dating to the sixth century, is where the first glosses in Castilian and Basque were written in the margins of Latin manuscripts.
For pilgrims passing through the Cárdenas valley, the San Millán site is one of the major cultural detours of the La Rioja section, though it lies slightly off the main Camino corridor.
