Description

Edit

Auvillar is a commune in the Tarn-et-Garonne department, situated on a bluff above the Garonne river on the Via Podiensis between Moissac and Lectoure. The village is designated one of the Plus Beaux Villages de France and is notable for its circular market hall, the Halle Ronde, a circular structure with a conical timber roof supported on stone columns, built in the seventeenth century.

The place de la Halle is surrounded by brick arcaded houses typical of the Garonne valley region. For pilgrims, Auvillar is one of the most visually distinctive stops on the Tarn-et-Garonne section, the circular market building an architectural form unlike anything else on the route.
