Alverca do Ribatejo

Alverca do Ribatejo is a town and civil parish in the municipality of Vila Franca de Xira, in the Lisbon district. It sits on the northern bank of the Tagus, in the flat alluvial corridor that characterises the Ribatejo region immediately north of the capital.

The town is known for its association with Portuguese aviation history: the Museu do Ar, Portugal’s national aeronautical museum, is located here at the former Alverca Air Base, housing a significant collection of historic aircraft. The aeronautical connection sets Alverca apart from other Ribatejo towns of similar size.

The Camino Português passes through or near Alverca on the flat riverside section of the route, where the Tagus plain extends to the horizon and the scale of the landscape shifts dramatically from the hilly terrain around Lisbon.
