Description
Alhandra is a civil parish in the municipality of Vila Franca de Xira, in the Lisbon district, situated on the eastern bank of the Tagus. The town has a traditional Ribatejo character, with deep roots in the bullfighting and horse-breeding culture that defines this part of the valley. The town centre occupies slightly elevated terrain above the river, offering views across the Tagus plain.
Alhandra also has historical significance from the Peninsular War: the Lines of Torres Vedras, the defensive fortification network constructed by Wellington to protect Lisbon from French advance, passed through this area. Several fortification remnants survive in the wider municipality.
The Camino Português passes through Alhandra on the riverside section north of Lisbon, making it a natural rest stop before the route continues along the Tagus plain.
