Descripción
Ajo is a small municipality in Cantabria situated on a rocky Atlantic headland, one of the more prominently exposed coastal positions on the Cantabrian coast between Santander and the Basque Country. The headland carries a lighthouse and commands wide views across the Bay of Biscay in multiple directions.
The village has a traditional character with stone farmhouses and the exposed coastal scrub of gorse and heather. The Faro de Ajo, the lighthouse at the cape, is the defining landmark and one of the more photogenic on this stretch of the Cantabrian coast.
The Camino del Norte route passes near or through Ajo on the exposed coastal section heading toward Galizano and the Santander estuary approach.
