Description
Zariquiegui is a small municipality in Navarra, situated at the foot of the Sierra del Perdón on the Camino Frances, approximately 10 kilometres from Pamplona. The village is a traditional Navarrese farming community with the Romanesque church of San Andrés and a square of stone houses.
Zariquiegui is best known to pilgrims as the location of the last reliable water fountain before the steep ascent to the Alto del Perdón, where wind turbines line the ridge and the famous iron sculpture of the pilgrim caravan stands. The fountain at the village entrance is marked on all Camino maps and provides an important logistical landmark.
After Zariquiegui, the path climbs sharply onto the exposed ridge of the Sierra del Perdón, one of the more demanding ascents on this section of the route.
