Description

Edit

Vila Nova de Gaia is a city and municipality in the Porto district, situated on the southern bank of the Douro river directly opposite Porto. The city’s riverside quarter, the Cais de Gaia, is lined with the lodges of major Port wine houses where wine is aged in oak barrels before export. This arrangement dates to the seventeenth century when British merchants established operations here to benefit from the cooler riverside microclimate.

The skyline viewed from Porto is one of the most recognised in Portugal: white-painted lodge buildings descending to the Douro quay with company names painted across their rooftops. The Dom Luís I bridge, a double-deck iron arch structure completed in 1886, connects Gaia to Porto at two levels.

The Camino Português crosses the Douro at this point, making the bridge passage one of the route’s most dramatic urban moments.
