Description
Vaylats is a commune in the Lot department, situated on the Causse de Limogne plateau on the Via Podiensis between Limogne-en-Quercy and Cahors. The village is centred on the Monastere de Vaylats, a Cistercian establishment founded in the medieval period and now occupied by a community of nuns.
The monastery continues to function as an active religious community, and the pilgrim gite associated with it provides hospitality in the tradition of monastic welcome. The surrounding causse landscape is the dry open limestone plateau: white stone tracks, scrub oak, and the wide horizons of the high plain.
For pilgrims, Vaylats is one of the few active monastic communities offering accommodation on the causse crossing, adding a contemplative dimension to the otherwise solitary plateau stage.
