Description
Valença do Minho is a town and municipality in the Viana do Castelo district, situated on a promontory above the Minho river at the border with Spain. Its principal monument is one of the best-preserved fortification systems in Portugal: a seventeenth-century Vauban-style star fortress with double enclosure walls, bastions, and dry moats, built to defend the river crossing against Spanish incursion.
The fortified town retains its historic fabric largely intact within the walls, with cobbled streets, traditional granite houses, and a lively commercial area catering to cross-border trade and tourism. The views from the ramparts across the Minho to Tui, with its cathedral and town, are among the most dramatic on the entire Camino Português.
For pilgrims, Valença is the last Portuguese town before crossing into Spain, and the passage through its fortress gates and across the bridge carries significant symbolic weight.
