Description
Toriello is a small locality in the municipality of Ribadesella, in Asturias, situated on the hillside terrain above the Sella river estuary in the immediate approach to the historic town of Ribadesella. The setting offers views down toward the river mouth and across to the medieval town on the far bank.
The name may derive from a diminutive of torre, meaning a small tower, suggesting the former presence of a minor fortification on the hillside. The surrounding terrain is the enclosed green valley of the lower Sella, with pasture and mixed woodland on the slopes above the estuary.
For pilgrims, Toriello is one of the final waypoints before the descent into Ribadesella and the crossing of the Sella river at the town bridge.
