Description
Souto Redondo is a small locality in the municipality of Santa Maria da Feira, in the Aveiro district. Its name translates directly as round chestnut grove, combining souto, a traditional Iberian term for a managed chestnut wood, with redondo, meaning round or circular.
Managed chestnut groves were economically central to rural life in the hills of northern Portugal, providing food, timber, and fodder. The toponym preserves this agrarian identity even as the settlement has shifted toward a dispersed residential pattern typical of the Santa Maria da Feira municipality today.
The locality sits on the Camino Portugues approaching the Porto district, in terrain that still carries patches of chestnut and mixed broadleaf woodland among the eucalyptus plantations.
