Description
San Romao da Retorta is a civil parish in the province of Lugo, Galicia, on the Camino route between Lugo and Baamonde or the Arzúa approach. The dedication to Saint Romanus, an early Christian martyr, is found across northern Iberia. The da Retorta element refers to a twisted or winding terrain feature, possibly a river bend or a winding valley.
The parish has a traditional Galician character with a stone church and the enclosed green valley landscape of the Lugo interior. The Romanesque or early medieval church fabric typical of Lugo parish churches gives the locality a layer of architectural heritage.
