Description
Ribadiso da Baixo is a locality in the municipality of Arzúa, A Coruña, Galicia, on the Camino Frances at the crossing of the Iso river. The hamlet is notable for the restored fifteenth-century pilgrims hospital, which now operates as an albergue with accommodation for pilgrims, continuing the hospitaller tradition in one of the most evocative medieval settings on the final Galician stages.
The stone buildings of the hospital complex are grouped around the medieval bridge and the riverside setting, the combination of water, medieval stone, and the surrounding oak woodland giving Ribadiso one of the most atmospheric characters of the Camino Frances. The hospital predates the albergue era by centuries and is one of the better documented medieval hospitaller sites in A Coruña province.
For pilgrims, Ribadiso is a widely praised overnight stop, the riverside setting and the medieval hospital building providing a connection to the long tradition of hospitallers who supported the pilgrimage.
