Description
Puente Fitero is a medieval bridge over the Pisuerga river on the Camino Frances, marking the boundary between the provinces of Burgos and Castilla y León. The bridge crossing here represents the entry into the province of Palencia and the flatter, more open terrain of the Tierra de Campos.
The medieval stone bridge, of multiple arches spanning the Pisuerga, has been a significant crossing point on the pilgrimage route for centuries, the river boundary corresponding to an historical administrative and cultural frontier between Castile and the Leonese territories.
For pilgrims, crossing Puente Fitero is both a logistical landmark and a symbolic one, the river marking the end of the Burgos stages and the beginning of the long Palencia and León corridor of the Camino Frances.
